Central SoMa Plan Environmental Review

About CEQA

The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requires that local government agencies consider the environmental consequences of projects and plans, such as this one, prior to their adoption. This is done through an Environmental Impact Report (EIR), a public document that provides detailed analyses of a proposed project’s potentially significant, adverse effects on the physical environment, ways to minimize the project’s significant environmental effects, and reasonable alternatives to the project that may reduce, avoid or eliminate substantial, adverse effects of the project. The document is meant to inform the community, government agencies, and decision makers when they consider the Central SoMa Plan and any subsequent projects in the Plan Area. However, the EIR itself does not approve any physical changes to the environment.

On March 28, 2018 the Planning Department released the Response to Comments for the Central SoMa Environmental Impact Report (EIR). The Response to Comments, combined with the Draft EIR, form the Plan's Final EIR.

Please note that the public review period ended on February 13, 2017. The Planning Commission does not conduct a hearing to receive comments on the Responses to Comments document, and no such hearing is required by the California Environmental Quality Act. Interested parties, however, may always write to Commission members or to the President of the Commission at 1650 Mission Street, Suite 400, San Francisco, 94103, and express an opinion on the Responses to Comments document, or on the Commission’s decision to certify the completion of the Final EIR for this project.

The decision to certify the Final EIR will be before the Planning Commission on May 10, 2018 (please check the Planning Commission agenda page on Monday, May 7 to see where the Central SoMa EIR Certification item is on the agenda). This document, along with the Draft EIR and errata, was originally slated to be before the Planning Commission for Final EIR certification on April 12, 2018, but will now be continued to May 10, 2018.
